Jocelyn Coles, Founder and CEO, Jocelyn Coles New York
"As a professional designer, couture bridal is my passion and I love making brides happy! I believe in love and that love never fails. I believe that brides should have the wedding gowns that they love — without compromise."
Before graduating, Coles interned at the corporate headquarters of Junko Yoshioka, one of the top couture bridal houses in NYC where she learned the ins-and-outs of running a couture fashion house. Coles says, "working alongside Junko was exciting and a great learning experience that I will never forget." Thankfully, by grace, having achieved her goals of learning both the business and craft of design, from humble origins Coles founded Jocelyn Coles New York by bootstrapping from home. From its inception, she operated Bride-to-Go™, a mobile bridal boutique (believed to be the first mobile bridal boutique of its kind) where she would load up her car with her custom, couture bridal designs (known as The Haute Experience™) and go-to her clients directly. Today, Coles designs handcrafted wedding gowns and accessories that are fully customizable in her private bridal atelier and retails online. She spends her time between New York City and Virginia serving brides in the Mid-Atlantic. The brand has been featured in regional, national and international publications such as Women's Wear Daily (WWD), Trendy Bride Magazine, The Virginian-Pilot and more. Coles' garments have graced both New York City runways and high-fashion exhibitions (by chief curator Dr. Valerie Steele) on Manhatten's Seventh Avenue known as Fashion Avenue. Both her garments and renderings have been on exhibit at The Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. The eponymous bridal collection launched in Fall 2015.
During her studies at FIT, Coles met and had the opportunity to work under the direction of a host of fashion industry leaders and professionals which includes the likes of the late Arnold Scaasi, Nina Garcia, Alek Wek, Robert Verdi, Iman, Teri Agins, Luca and Angela Missoni of Missoni, Bernard Holtzman of Herve Bernard and the illustrious Giorgio Armani, whose staff hand-picked Coles to be featured and filmed for Mr. Armani's personal film documentary in New York City.
Continuing her ambitious plan, Coles went on to graduate with honors from the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York (FIT), where she was accepted in the prestigious accelerated fashion design program. There, Coles specialized in both Fine Tailoring, mastering the fit and construction of her garments, and Special Occasion High Fashion, where she discovered her niche: Haute Couture Bridal Design. She excelled in the art of haute couture techniques and embellishments, being one of FIT's top students chosen to display her garments in museum quality fashion exhibits. She was also the 1st runner-up for the Arnold Scassi critic award in the famous senior fashion show FIT on the Catwalk.
Coles executed the first stage of her plan by graduating from Berkeley College in NYC with a degree in Fashion Marketing and Management. While studying at Berkeley she had the pleasure of meeting famous fashion designers Betsey Johnson (who personally offered her an internship on the spot) and Max Azria, Founder and CEO of BCBG Max Azria Group. After consideration and turning down Bottega Veneta (Gucci Group at the time), she interned at the corporate headquarters of BCBG Max Azria Group in NYC. Coles explains "While at BCBG I learned a lot from Max. He has built an empire that is quite inspiring."
Jocelyn Coles is an award-winning New York fashion designer and entrepreneur. She is Virginia native with the same birthplace as the original Gibson Girl, Irene Langhorne Gibson, the international fashion ideal of the turn of the 20th century. Coles knew she had a divine gift of design ever since she could remember. By faith, she moved to Manhattan determined to pursue her dream of owning a fashion house. She was focused and went with a plan to learn the business first and master her craft second.
